“Here’s the conversation I overheard while at my local bank,” says Harvey Pashibin, of Upper Lafayette:

“A couple is talking:

“‘Don’t forget, you overdrew our checking account by $50 last month.’

“‘That’s not correct. I SAVED you money — ’cause I coulda spent more!’

“I’m wondering if the couple are members of the U.S. Congress.”

Resist change!

Paul Belanger takes note of the latest news about Baton Rouge’s beloved pizza joint:

“I noticed that Fleur de Lis Pizza is for sale. I have advice for anyone who buys it: DON’T CHANGE ANYTHING!”

Mysterious device

Joan Hall, of Baton Rouge, says, “All this talk about coffee reminds me of growing up in a family of cooks.

“We had percolators or the old drip coffee pots. When the ‘Mister Coffee’ came out, my grandma was given one.

“But nobody could use it. My aunts, uncles, Mama and even Grandma, who was a great cook, said, ‘What is this?’

“Somehow they figured it out after many attempts.”

Have a chew

“During my childhood and teenage years,” says Joyce Ryder, “I would often catch my dad chewing on ground coffee in the afternoon.

“Too lazy to brew it? Too busy?

“Evidently, it gave him the caffeine boost he needed. I never asked him, nor did I ever try it.”

Put a sock in it!

Jerry Arbour, of Baton Rouge, says, “When I was attending Sacred Heart School, my grandmother would get up and get me off to school.

“She was raised in New Orleans and drank strong coffee all her life. She used a two-cup drip pot and Community Coffee Dark Roast (plug intended).

“If she made a pot and it was not strong enough, she threw it out and started over.

“Needless to say, I have drank strong coffee my whole life.

“Upon my marriage, my new wife’s grandmother presented me with her old porcelain two-cup drip pot with the ‘piece de resistance,’ a clean sock, toe portion only, to place the grinds in.

“I loved that pot and its accouterments! Somehow it and its accouterments disappeared. I certainly miss it, and suspect I know the perpetrator.
