11-year-old killed in shooting near Crestway Avenue; teen in custody, BRPD says

A child was killed in a shooting Thursday evening, Baton Rouge police said early Friday.

Matthew Fortenberry, 11, was shot shortly after 6:45 p.m. while sitting inside a vehicle near the 5600 block of Crestway Avenue, according to police.

He was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead. 

Officers also found a 17-year-old who had been shot in the 6300 block of Greenwell Street

After being treated at a hospital, police said the teenager was arrested and booked on one count of first-degree murder, four counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count each of false imprisonment with a dangerous weapon and illegal discharge of a firearm. 

They did not release details about what led to the teen’s arrest or provide details about a possible motive.

The shooting remains under investigation. Additional details were not immediately available.
