2 pedestrians killed, another hurt in separate Ascension, Livingston parish crashes

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Louisiana State Police are investigating after two pedestrians were killed in separate crashes on Monday, July 24.

Troopers were first called to a crash near Roddy Road around 1 a.m. in Gonzales. A 2015 Dodge Dart was headed east on LA 935 State police said Sarah Berteau, 41, was walking east and wearing dark clothing when she was hit from behind by the Dodge.

Berteau died at the scene of the crash. The driver of the Dodge had minor injuries in the crash.

Later in the morning, troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash in Walker around 3:30 a.m. A 2017 Ford F-150 was headed east on LA 1024 when Candace Linder, 39, and another pedestrian were walking on the road and wearing dark clothing.

Both pedestrians were hit from behind by the Ford and taken to the hospital, and Linder died from her injuries.

Troopers said that the reason the two pedestrians were walking in the roadway is still under investigation.

Troopers do not suspect that the driver in either collision was impaired. Toxicology samples were taken, and the investigations are ongoing.
