BATON ROUGE, LA. (BRPROUD) — In less than a week, Companion Animal Alliance, known as CAA, took in 144 dogs due to capacity limits. The shelter reported euthanizing at least 10 dogs a day.
The shelter posted on social media about their current situation of the disturbing amount of animal drop-offs.
Communications Director at CAA, Emily Lemoine said times have been tough at the shelter.
“We hate to say it, but things are really bad here right now,” said Lemoine. “The situation is dire.”
One day, the shelter took in 55 animals, 34 were dogs. Of those 34 dogs, only five have been adopted.
Lemoine said the facility is currently operating with 100 more dogs than kennels.
They are currently being forced to euthanize 10+ dogs every day, due to the overwhelming intake numbers.
Companion Animal Alliance is the only place in East Baton Rouge Parish that will take in every single animal that comes to the doors.
“But having to euthanize healthy animals, relatively healthy animals, that could be rehabilitated,” says Lemonie “it’s heartbreaking.”
According to their recent Facebook post, they wrote a statement. Read their words below.
“Transparency is key. We understand, more than anyone, how easy it is to get angry, overwhelmed, and defeated. Direct these strong emotions into something that could save a life–adopt, foster, advocate pet services for pet owners in our community, and work to help reunite lost pets with owners without ever entering the shelter.”
