BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – People worldwide have greeted spring with joyful celebrations for centuries. In Baton Rouge, people are still adding new traditions to an old holiday.

Easter is a popular spring celebration focusing on the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Many Christian religions started observing it around the second century. And some traditions come from more ancient rites.

South Louisiana has a festive atmosphere. So, it’s no surprise Easter is a big holiday in the capital area. It has deep roots in faith, family, heritage and culture.

See how Baton Rouge, officials and leaders are creating new community traditions.

New event highlights US history

This will be the first-ever Easter egg roll at the The Old State Capitol. Guests will enjoy egg rolls, races, egg decorating, face painting and a visit from the Easter Bunny.

Mary Durusau of the Louisiana Old State Capitol said, “It’s patterned after the White House Easter egg roll, which has been around for more than 100 years. We are going to have a great time. Kids will be invited to paint their individual wooden eggs and a spoon to roll it with. We will do “races” by age groups. We think this is a great way to have fun, and for kids to learn a little history as well.”

The family-friendly event will be at the Old State Capitol’s front lawn at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 2.

Church shares love, supports people with special needs

Eggstravaganza on the Go has been around for a few years. Healing Place Church holds it on Saturday the week before Easter.

“We show the love of Christ to individuals with special needs and their families. We will deliver Easter baskets filled with treats, toys, crafts and gifts for parents, complete with a front-yard egg hunt, as well as meals for each family,” said Marla Stroup of HPC.

This year, the event will happen Saturday, April 1. Click here for more.
