BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — IDEA Public Schools will be offering free meals for students ages 18 and under during the summer.

A child does not have to go to an IDEA school to receive a meal, school officials said.

The free meals come as a part of IDEA Schools’ dedication to helping the community live healthier lifestyles this summer, according to a news release. The school system cites the Annie E. Casey Foundation, saying almost a fifth of children in Louisiana face hunger.

“Children need good nutrition year-round so they can learn, grow and succeed in life,” said Fernando Aguilar, vice president of the child nutrition program at IDEA Public Schools. “With nearly 197,000 food insecure children living in Louisiana, these healthy meals are vital to nourishing children during the summer vacation.”

Summer meals provided will include breakfast and lunch. The program begins Tuesday, May 30, and ends Friday, July 21. However, officials said the food service will be closed on federal holidays and from July 3-7.

Breakfast will be served from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. IDEA Public Schools said meals must be eaten in the school’s cafeteria.
