BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The MOVEBR initiative plans to create safer roadways for drivers.

Residents in Baton Rouge are no strangers to the roadways in Baton Rouge as they struggle in their daily commutes.

“I think there needs to be a more conducive meeting on how to repair the roadways,” said Deidrea Moore, resident.

City leaders are now honing in on this issue with MOVEBR’s two programs that will be used to improve roadways and bridges in Baton Rouge. The initiative is one of the most significant transportation infrastructure investments in East Baton Rouge Parish history.

“It started in 2018 when the MOVEBR program was approved by voters in December,” said Fred Raiford, East Baton Rouge Director of Transportation.

Now, upcoming projects include roadway work on Old Hammond Highway, Constantin Boulevard, and bridges for the Mall of Louisiana extension. Raiford said repairs have already begun.

“We have been working very, very hard every day. Certainly, the COVID issue caused some delays, some problems with people being out of work and things like that but we’re back in full gear now, and we’re moving forward with a lot of the projects that I feel would be enhancements for the community,” said Raiford.

The road rehabilitation program is also a part of MOVEBR. Those upcoming projects include work on North Foster Drive, Hollywood Street, Highland Road, and Evangeline Street.
