A wildfire in Livingston Parish that began in a hayfield quickly spread to the nearby woods, prompting a multi-agency response Tuesday afternoon.
The Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office warned people in a Facebook post that agencies were responding to the fire at Arnold and Myers roads in the Denham Springs area. Officials urged people to avoid the area.
Arnold Road from La. 16 to Linder was announced closed shortly before 5 p.m., LPSO officials said.
District 4 Fire Chief James Wascom said the wildfire began in a hayfield and spread to the woods.
Shortly before 6 p.m., District 5 Fire Chief Joe Koczrowski, who led the response, said the fire was 100% contained and the agency continued to work on a few hot spots.
Koczrowski said the fire began around 2:30 p.m.
“It’s believed this started when someone was baling hay,” he said. “The hay got up in the machine’s belts and caught fire. The fire quickly spread over 70 acres with wind changes.”
No injuries were reported, and those who live in the area were notified in case of an evacuation. He added that the fire came within 25 feet of some homes and structures.
LPSO Air Support provided the agency a bird’s-eye view so resources could be redirected, the chief said. Koczrowski asked people to avoid Arnold and Myers roads as heavy machinery was being moved and relocated to address hot spots.
