BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The 38th annual Wearin’ of the Green parade in Baton Rouge is set to return Saturday, March 18, and the Budweiser Clydesdales are making a big entrance into the city’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade.

The founder of the Wearn’ of the Green Parade, Pat Shingleton, said he started the parade in 1986.

“I call it the Wearin of the Green Parade for two reasons, one, everything is so beautifully green this time of year and two, people wear green,” said Shingleton.

Celebrations start with the 5K Shamrock Run on the morning of the parade. The marathon benefits Baton Rouge Green, an organization dedicated to educating the community on sustainability and expanding green spaces in the city.

The parade begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 18. The route starts from the Catholic Life Center along Hundred Oaks Avenue and ends at the Acadian Thruway.

Shingleton believes that about 100,000 people will be along the route, this includes people along the route and those participating.

This year the parade will include 75 floats and 10 marching bands.

Singleton said there will be Go-Pro cameras along the routes, monitored by law enforcement to keep people safe. BRPD Police Chief Murphy Paul and EBR Sheriff Sid Geautreaux will be in attendance. Louisiana State Troopers will be along the routes to guide traffic.

ROAD CLOSURES:

Starting at 7:30 a.m., Perkins Road from S. Acadian to Park Blvd. will be closed.

8:45 – 9:00 a.m., roads surrounding the Run and Parade Route will be shut down.

Shingleton said that this year, all floats will have QR codes to scan on each float rating them with 1 out of 5 shamrocks. They are based on crowd involvement, 1 is the lowest, and 5 is the highest.

This year’s grand marshal is the owner of Mockler Beverage Company, Tim Mockler.

“Parades can just be cars driving down the streets, or they can be floats,” said Mockler. “Or they can be the best, which is having a Clydesdales there. Something that is real, something that is big that you’re not going to see every day.”

Mockler said if you see him during the parade, to get a gold “lucky” coin. That coin will provide free Budweiser beer to individuals 21+ and older.

Raising Cane’s CEO Todd Graves reigned as Grand Marshal of the 2022 parade and rode down the route with rapper Nelly.
