DENHAM SPRINGS, La. (BRPROUD) –  The Denham Springs community came together after finding out Cpl. Shawn Kelly, the officer sent to the hospital in critical condition after a May shooting, died on Friday, June 2.

The city’s fire department hoisted up a flag in the middle of South Range Avenue, which is right across from the Petco where Kelly was shot.

Residents made it their mission to show love one last time to the fallen officer by bringing out signs and flags.

“Hard to watch someone who did so many good things for the community be laid to rest,” said Michelle Hutson, a family friend of Kelly.

Denham Springs resident Darlene Lott went to the store to buy a poster board as soon as she found out the news. She said she didn’t know Kelly personally, but knew she wanted to pay her full respect.

“I really wanted to get a flag, to be honest with you. And then I thought, ‘No, you know what? It’s about the service that he gave us.’ He showed up to help the community, then his life was taken,” she said. “So I just wanted to take a little time, whether it cost me a dollar or something to say thank you. Because we appreciate it. And I’m not the only one in Denham Springs that feels that way.”

Community members said Kelly’s death hurts but will continue to support his family, especially with financial assistance.
