BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A task force made up of East Baton Rouge city leaders is working to improve inmates’ living conditions inside the parish prison.

During a Monday tour, councilmembers saw mold, rats and prison cells in need of repair. Councilman Darryl Hurst said a new facility needs to be built for inmates and the community must be involved in the process.

“I’m encouraging the citizens to get involved, to come to our meetings to ensure that we have the best facilities and the best excellent assets in the city-parish,” he said.

Hurst said they don’t have the funds to build a new facility, adding that a tax is needed.

The next task force meeting will be in two weeks at the Juvenile Detention Center.
