BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Deputies have arrested a suspect concerning a Friday, May 5 shooting.
The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office arrested Kenneth McKenzie, 31, and charged him with second-degree murder.
According to police, deputies responded to a shooting on Friday, May 5 at a gas station in the 9900 block of Bluebonnet Boulevard. Upon arrival, deputies found a male with multiple gunshot wounds outside his vehicle. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim was later identified as Juandell Miller, 33.
Arrest documents say Miller was working on his car when he was approached by McKenzie. Witnesses say McKenzie was wearing dark pants, a purple hoodie and was holding a red plastic bag when he approached Miller. McKenzie reportedly removed a rifle-style gun from the bag and shot Miller multiple times.
After the shooting, police say, McKenzie fled the scene on foot and got into a black Dodge Avenger that was being driven by another suspect.
Detectives recovered shell casings and got information on the vehicle and its registered owner.
According to official documents, the registered owner of the Dodge Avenger was interviewed by EBRSO detectives. During the interview, the owner told detectives McKenzie came to his home with another male passenger and borrowed his car. McKenzie took the car and left, along with the unknown male passenger. McKenzie returned the vehicle a few hours later, but would not tell the owner where he went.
Detectives were later informed results of DNA testing on the shell casings were in. The DNA reportedly matches McKenzie.
