NEW ROADS, La. (BRPROUD) — Firefighters in Pointe Coupee Parish responded to Big Cajun 2 Power Plant on Cajun Road Wednesday, Feb. 28.

Pointe Coupee Fire District 5 was called to the fire around 5:38 a.m. said Chief Pedro Leonard. He said it took about five minutes for them to respond.

Fire operations and command were set up at the location, according to Leonard. A fire was burning in the conveyor belt house and the conveyor belt itself. Leonard said, “It was the main conveyor belt that provides supplies from the Mississippi River to the main plant.”

He said that a water supply was set up on the second truck and additional crews arrived at the scene. Pointe Coupee Fire Districts 2 and 3 assisted at the scene.

Leonard said someone from the plant fire brigade was already attacking fire when firefighters arrived at the scene. He helped fight the fire after the other firefighters arrived too, according to Leonard.

Firefighters made entry into the space and attacked the fire. Leonard said that they hit the hot spots and got the fire under control.

The Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff’s Office said there were “small flare-ups, but nothing got serious.”

The fire is now out and all units have cleared the scene. Leonard said that no one was hurt during this fire.
