Friday Morning: Wet today with no end in sight and a new hurricane season outlook

Today: Its a foggy start this morning in some areas. The fog should dissipate an hour or two after the sun rises. Late morning into the afternoon, and maybe the evening, we will see scattered showers and thunderstorms track across the region. Since they will be more scattered, flooding will be less of a concern, but I won’t rule out that threat completely. Highs will be in the upper-80s. Overnight lows drop to 74 degrees.

This Weekend: This weekend will continue a wet pattern already seen for much of this week. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible on both Saturday and Sunday afternoon with highs in the low-90s.

Next Week: If you were hoping for the wet pattern to end next week, keep hoping. Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will continue each afternoon with highs in the low-90s to upper-80s.

Tracking the Tropics: No tropical development is expected in the next 5 days. However, we need to watch the tropics closely in the coming weeks. The next 2 months mark the most active periods for hurricane season. The National Hurricane Center has released an updated outlook and it hasn’t changed much since their original forecast in May. It still calls for an active season. Our last named system was Tropical Storm Colin on July 2-3. Why haven’t we seen any more activity since then? DUST! Saharan dust to be more specific. The Atlantic has been covered in wave after wave of Saharan dust coming off the coast of West Africa from the Sahara Desert. Dust hinders the development of tropical systems, but this pattern won’t last. When the supply of dust is reduced to the Atlantic, tropical systems will be able to develop again.
