Louisiana is one of only three states that returned to pre-pandemic reading levels by 2023, according to a report from Education Recovery Scorecard, a national think tank. While we applaud the progress, our education experts here at The Center for Literacy & Learning, and educational leaders statewide, understand the enormous work still ahead of us.

Louisiana began its path to reforming literacy and reading instruction in 2019, when the center worked with legislative leaders to form Louisiana’s inaugural Literacy Commission. That group of experts, led by the Louisiana Department of Education and the center, immediately focused on successful reforms and best practices already in place, mostly from neighboring Mississippi.
