ASCENSION PARISH, La. (BRPROUD)– Organizations in south Louisiana say homelessness is on the rise with less volunteers and supplies available.

According to Danyell Henriques, the Director of Havens Care, this year, more individuals without homes have been utilizing the organization to find resources.

“They were mostly in hiding, now they’re coming out more,” Henriques said. “They are still frightened of coming out.”

Henriques said that on average, she works with about 10 to 15 people a week. A few years ago, it was slim to none.

A study from the Houston Coalition for the Homeless has a diagram that shows why many people in the U.S. face homelessness.

The study reveals that 35 percent of people who face homelessness, which is the highest percentage, are in that situation due to job loss. Without work, they do not have the means to pay for food, clothing, or housing.

Henriques said she finds those statistics to be true in her community.

In last year’s report, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development said that there were nearly 7,300 people without homes in Louisiana.

That’s why Henriques has been working to keep her non-profit running. She’s patterned with organizations like Walmart, who have donated dozens of boxes of supplies.

In a statement, Sheriff Bobby Webre of Ascension Parish addressed the homeless population:

“As law enforcement officers, we have a responsibility to protect and serve all members of our community, including those individuals faced with homelessness. We are committed to working with our community partners to address this issue with compassion and understanding.”
