BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — It’s that time of year when parents have to vaccinate their children before the new school year. Local officials are recommending other vaccines not on the required list.

When we talk about back to school we focus a lot on clothing and supplies, but the Louisiana Department of Health believes the most essential thing is vaccines.

LDH State Health Officer Dr. Joseph Kanter will talk about the decrease in the state’s childhood immunization rates because of the pandemic. He wants to remind families how important it is for their child to get their shots and why that matters. He will also discuss the importance of COVID-19 boosters and the lessons learned the agency has learned about the virus.

One doctor agrees with him saying if people do not get vaccinated, then there could be a repeat of school closures because of illnesses this upcoming school year.

“We are seeing a decrease in the amount within our community, like a decrease in the disease rate. However, as we start going back inside more, as we start getting back in school where kids are all together sharing all those germs, that is when we tend to see an increase in communicable diseases like flu, like RSV, like COVID. So we want to kind of remind people that, yes, it’s we’re in a pretty good state right now, but there is still a chance that if we kind of decrease those protection barriers that we’ve been doing, that we might see an increase in the number of cases again,” explained Ochsner Health Family Medicine Dr. Rachael Kermis.

She said to book your appointment early and not wait until the last minute. Though COVID shots are not required they should be something you want to protect your child, the doctor said.

Kanter will also discuss the $100 million being restored in the state’s budget after a veto by the governor at the Press Club of Baton Rouge Monday.
