BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – The Louisiana Center for Health Equity is celebrating the 11th annual Women’s Health Day & Retreat 2023: Celebrating Wellness and Culture. This year’s celebration will be held Thursday, May 18th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the State Capitol.

“The creation of the Office on Women’s Health is something to celebrate as we work collectively to improve the health and well-being of girls and women,” said Alma Stewart Allen, president of Louisiana Center for Health Equity.

Event organizers said the theme of this year’s event is “The Right to Livelihood,” which will focus on factors impacting women’s health and health outcomes, including healthcare during the COVID-19 era, family economic security, and advocacy for policies, such as the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA).

“Many women are working and struggling to earn enough income to take care of their basic
needs, and it is affecting their health,” said Kheri Monks, president of the National Congress of
Black Women Greater Baton Rouge Chapter. Monks is the mother of two preemie babies, Gem
and Jax.

Thursday’s event is free to the public, but registration is encouraged. Due to limited seating,
registration for the Luncheon Symposium is required. Registration will be open until capacity is
met. Donations will be accepted.
