NEW ROADS, La. (BRPROUD) – A New Roads police officer is on administrative leave after being accused of sexually assaulting three minors.
“Three juveniles out of the New Roads area indicated that at New Roads Officer has sexually assaulted them while they were staying at his residence,” said the teens’ attorney Ron Haley.
Disturbing text messages between one of the alleged victims and the officer- obtained by our investigative unit- show the teen detailing the alleged abuse.
“YK [You Know] what you did. I’m 17 and I was sleeping. You sexually assaulted me, I told you plenty of times that I only saw you as a brother.”
The officer responded: “The end result was I failed you, I hurt you, I don’t remember any of it, but if you say it happened, then it happened. I wish I could make things right with you.”
“What was jarring is that they actually had proof,” Haley said.
The boys allegedly came to Haley with stories about sexual abuse from the officer they considered a friend.
“It appears that this officer used his standing, really that’s what it is, use his standing as an officer allure these kids into a situation and use that influence to make sexual advances to him,” said Haley.
They gave him evidence of alleged inappropriate behavior, including videos and photos.
“These kids were allowed to play in his undercover unit, these kids were allowed to play with his firearms that were given to him by the department and other guns that he had in the house, all while allegedly consuming alcohol,” Haley explained.
When Haley received this information from the juveniles, he immediately called New Roads Mayor Cornell Dukes.
“So I picked up the phone and said, listen, I think you have a problem,” Haley recalled.
Haley said Dukes contacted New Roads Chief of Police Kevin McDonald and the officer was immediately put on administrative leave.
“I do believe that Chief McDonald and Mayor Dukes in this instance deserves credit for this,” said Haley.
McDonald said over the phone they are waiting on the boys to file an official report with the police to begin a formal investigation.
“We plan to make a formal report with the New Roads Police Department Monday morning,” said Haley.
McDonald says an investigation into the allegations is currently underway.
The police officer is not facing any criminal charges and NBC 33/Fox 44 is making an editorial decision not to name the officer.
