BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center will be the first hospital in East Baton Rouge Parish to perform hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) treatment for abdomen cancer patients.
OLOL said Surgical Oncologist Mohammad Al Efishat, MD, was the first to perform the procedure. Hospital officials said the procedure is used as an alternative for patients with inoperable or late-stage cancer.
According to a news release, the surgery removes all of the patient’s visible tumors before treating the area with chemotherapy to get rid of any invisible tumor cells in the abdomen. OLOL said HIPEC can also be used to treat other advanced cancers of the abdomen, including tumors of the appendix, colon, rectum, mesothelioma, ovaries, and stomach.
“HIPEC is a true game-changer, as it helps a patient population with advanced tumors who otherwise would have no treatment options,” said Dr. Efishat. “I’m excited to be a part of the Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Institute team who introduced this surgery to the Baton Rouge community and is constantly working to advance cancer treatments and provide the best possible care for our patients.”
