OSHA investigating explosions, fire at Plaquemine Dow plant

PLAQUEMINE, La. (BRPROUD) — The Occupational Safety and Health Administration confirmed that it is investigating after Friday explosions reported at the Dow Chemical plant.

OSHA provided no further details at this time. More information can be released after the investigation concludes.

No injuries were reported after multiple explosions the night of Friday, July 14. A fire was fully extinguished around 5 a.m. Sunday. Dow Louisiana Operations said the plant’s Glycol 2 Unit was affected.

Some residents in Plaquemine were placed under a shelter-in-place order until it was lifted on early Saturday morning. One resident described seeing green smoke after the explosions.

In its latest update, Dow Louisiana Operations said it is assessing the incident and the next steps will be shared when available. In a statement, Dow said air monitoring was ongoing by the plant, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and a third-party monitoring service, adding that there is no indication of community impact.
