President Joe Biden on Wednesday announced two new nominees for federal judgeships in Louisiana, one in the New Orleans-based Eastern District of Louisiana and one in the Western District, which has offices in Lafayette, Shreveport and other cities.

Biden’s pick for the Eastern District seat is Brandon Scott Long, a federal prosecutor in New Orleans. His choice for the Western District is Jerry Edwards Jr., who currently serves as the first assistant U.S. attorney in that district.

Edwards, who is based in Shreveport, would be the first person of color to serve on the Western District’s bench, according to a news release from Biden.

Edwards has been first assistant U.S. attorney since last year, according to the release. Before that, he was chief of the office’s civil division.

Long has worked as an assistant U.S. attorney in New Orleans since 2014, although during a portion of that span, he was detailed to the FBI, where he served as deputy chief of staff. He previously worked as prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Washington, D.C.
