BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Dana Territo is a woman so passionate about an illness that affects far too many.

Territo is an Alzheimer’s advocate in Denham Springs. Her dedication to spreading awareness started when Territo became a volunteer at a nursing home. She was assigned to look after someone with the disease.

“Over six million people in the United States have it, and yes it diminishes their capacity to hold onto those memories,” said Territo. “It’s that ambiguous loss, because that person is still physically there, but yet not there.”

Then her work began. From walks to writing, Territo wrote a hardcover book, “What My Grandchildren Taught Me About Alzheimer’s Disease,” to help those learn more about the disease and how to care for those with it.

“I got involved with the local chapter, Alzheimer’s Association,” she explained. “I also got involved with the first walk here in 1995. So it just ballooned. It just fed me, and my book is to help caregivers with an easy read, and with something that they can identify with.”

There’s also another book she uses as a sort of guiding light, for her acts of kindness, her Bible.

“It’s that heart of grace that blooms and it’s generated by love,” she said.

Territo’s heart is on her mission.

“The most important thing is to get educated about the disease, because like my slogan, the more you know, the better it will go,” Territo said.
