BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Southern University and A&M College is the first HBCU to enter a program that aims to bring more teachers into the state.
Southern joined with the Louisiana Workforce Commission for its Registered Apprenticeship Teachers program. The program offers LWC the chance to address challenges like retention and recruitment.
Money is something that discourages teachers from entering the field because it often requires candidates to work without pay to complete their necessary hours, LWC said.
The Registered Apprenticeship Teachers program drops some of the cost pressures with traditional teacher programs by including an earn-as-you-learn component. Those who don’t have a degree in education but want to get into the classroom can use this as an alternative as well.
LWC said the program is three years with an On-the-Job Learning attainment of 10 competencies and a minimum of 1,800 hours of technical instruction.
Employment will be through the East Baton Rouge Parish School System. Candidates will begin an apprenticeship at the beginning of their second year.
“We are honored that the Louisiana Workforce Commission has selected Southern as the first university in the state to participate in the Registered Apprenticeship program,” said Dennis J. Shields, president-chancellor of Southern University. “We have a rich history, present, and future of dynamic educators that serve in our communities. This program and partnership will allow us to address the needs of our state and to continue our mission to prepare students to reach their highest potentials without barriers.”
