There was plenty of excitement for the Southern women’s basketball team and not much drama as the Jaguars routed Prairie View 62-37 in the quarterfinals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament on Thursday evening.

Southern (16-14) built a 31-12 halftime lead, and outscored Prairie View 22-3 in the first six minutes of the third quarter.

For the game, Prairie View (15-15) made 9 of 49 shots (18.4%) and didn’t find an offensive rhythm until the fourth quarter when Southern worked on running out the clock.

Offensively, Southern’s platoon system resulted in a balanced attack with 11 players scoring. Tyneisha Metcalf led the way with 13 points followed by Taylor Williams with nine and Genovea Johnson with eight. Diamond Hunter pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.

“We did a really good job defensively, and that kind of sparked the offense,” Southern coach Carlos Funchess said. “If we continue to do that we’ll be in good shape.”

Southern advances to a semifinal matchup with top-seeded Jackson State at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Jackson State (21-8) won the only regular-season meeting between the teams 64-57 on Jan. 30 in Baton Rouge.

Prairie View averaged 67 points per game coming into Thursday’s game. The Panthers’ point total was their lowest since losing 64-36 at Wichita State on Dec. 18, 2015.

Kennedi Heard was the only Panther in double figures with 12 points. Leading scorer Diana Rosenthal made 2 of 15 shots and scored six points, 10 below her average.

The first half was all Southern.

Prairie View made just three field goals in the half and shot 13.0% from the field. Southern outrebounded Prairie View 18-13, and only allowed the Panthers to grab two offensive rebounds.

Taylor Williams led the way with nine points. All nine Jaguars who played in the half scored.

Southern took an 8-2 lead to start the game. Williams converted a late three-point play as the Jaguars led 16-8 after one quarter.

Prairie View got a basket three minutes into the second quarter as Southern led 20-11. The Panthers only scored one point the rest of the half, allowing Southern to build a 31-12 halftime lead.
