St. Gabriel mayor, police chief races go to April 29 runoff election

IBERVILLE PARISH, La. (BRPROUD) — The mayoral and police chief races for the city of St. Gabriel will be determined by a runoff on April 29. The election results, as of 9:50 p.m. Saturday, March 25, is complete but unofficial.

In the mayor’s race, Kyle Grace will face off against incumbent Lionel Johnson Jr. Both are Democrats. Grace had 40% of the primary votes, and Johnson drew 47% of the vote.

Incumbent Kevin “Butchie” Ambeau is vying for the seat against Anthony Davis for the Chief of Police. Both are Democrats. Ambeau had 46% of the vote and Davis had 19% in the primary.

In the council race, the five candidates with the most votes (all Democrats) were: Hoza C. Redditt Sr., Kelvin “Yorkey Boy” York Sr. (incumbent), Melvin L. Hasten Sr. (incumbent), Jeffery Hayes (incumbent) and William “June” Cushenberry Jr.

Winners are in bold, and candidates going to a runoff are italicized. In a race with only one winner, the top candidate must have 50% of the vote, plus one to take the seat.

  • Lionel Johnson Jr. (Democrat): 670, 47%

  • Jamaal “Bigg Mall” Carter (Democrat): 249, 18%
  • Anthony Davis (Democrat): 263, 19%
  • Stephenia “Sue” Jackson (Democrat): 240, 17%
