BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – School is ending, and Baton Rouge families can look forward to a new type of summer camp for their children. With a mission to raise the confidence of young girls in the Baton Rouge community, Dana Hayes has brought Junior Cosmetology to life.

“We teach them how to shampoo and condition, blow dry, flat iron, braid, and much more. A whole bunch of creative styling,” said the founder of the nonprofit summer camp, Dana Hayes.

Six-year-old Emmy Pack is an example of a young girl in the area who aspires to be a hairstylist when she grows up.

Through Junior Cosmetology she has learned braiding and how to style with heating tools. Now with the basics, Pack is looking forward to learning more.

“I wanna learn how to do box braids,” she said. When asked why, Peck said, “I get paid and make little girls pretty.”

Seeing young girls wanting to be hairstylists makes Hayes happy, and says she can also relate.

“I was always in the salon when I was in elementary school. My mom will play with my hair and I will go and add some extensions to make them longer. So I was always in the salon and this is my passion,” Hayes recalls.

The summer camp will be for girls from ages 7 to 17. Besides lessons and creative flow, each student will be provided with a mannequin, styling products, styling tools and a stand.

Those interested in signing up their child will have two sessions to choose from, one in June and one in July. Both sessions will fall on Sundays and be held from 2-5 p.m.

Classes will be held at 4914 Government St., and you can register here or by phone at (225) 377-6033.

“It is my hope that each girl that attends the camp, they get a sense of self-confidence, they able to present themselves to the public, you know, their hair will be able to be in order. And that will make them feel really good about themselves,” said Hayes.
