Two Prairieville men charged after fight leads to house fire

PRAIRIEVILLE, La. (BRPROUD) – Two Ascension Parish residents are behind bars after an investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office. Jeremy Scherer, 37 and Jason Finley, 43, were booked into the Ascension Parish Jail in connection with a mobile home fire on Friday, May 5.

The Prairieville Fire Department was called to a fire in the 38000 block of Smith Road on that date. Firefighters arrived around 6:30 a.m. and determined that six people were able to get out of the mobile home safely. Two of those six people were Scherer and Finley, investigators said.

According to investigators, Scherer and Finley got into a physical fight and threats with weapons were made hours before the fire.

During the investigation, deputies determined that the fire was set on purpose in a bedroom. Warrants were secured for Scherer and Finley. Finley was arrested on the same day that the fire took place and Scherer was apprehended on Friday, May 12.

Finley was charged with one count of aggravated assault. His bond was set at $175,000.

Scherer was charged with one count of aggravated arson and one count of aggravated battery. His bond was set at $200,000.
