BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Walk for Humanity Baton Rouge invited the community to the A.W Mumford Stadium to participate in a 5K health run.

This is the organization’s first year back hosting fundraisers in person since COVID-19. They aim to gather people from all walks of life together to end global suffering.

The main reason we do this walk here on campus is to support the college kids in Ethiopia, and we have about 450 college students going to school.. many of them who can’t afford to buy basics,” said Velma Traver.

The Walk for Humanity fundraiser has been held in Baton Rouge for 10 years with 3 years in Shreveport.

With the help of sponsors and donations, they’ve been able to help provide food, education and shelter for people in need. Ashagre Yigletu is a 6-year participant and professor at Southern University. He said it’s always about advocating to make a change.

The event should be embraced by everybody I guess, by anybody who has a humanitarian spirit because this is how you can make a difference in the life of young people, especially in marginalized and underdeveloped communities,” he said.

People from Ethiopia were also in attendance. Officials said all the money from this fundraiser will go directly to the students at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia.
