ZACHARY, La. (BRPROUD) — Zachary police are getting a brand new, multi-million dollar, state-of-the-art headquarters. City officials say it is long overdue for the growing city.
The shovels are in the dirt, as the city of Zachary breaks ground on what will be a brand-new state-of-the-art police station.
“This building gives us two large classrooms, in there where we can now hold some training here. And we also have in there a workout facility,” explained Chief of Police Darryl Lawrence.
The 21,000-square-foot building on Old Slaughter Rd offers more space and will house 60 police officers and personnel.
“Different people spread out throughout the city and different areas of town that are needed to bring back everybody under one roof,” Mayor David McDavid said.
Lawrence agreed, “We built it with the idea of expansion and growth, adding extra patrolmen, adding detectives and just adding to the department.”
Neighbors who live across the street say the $8 million investment is long overdue. “It’s a lot of protection and that’s what we need no matter what. Because. Zachary is Still growing,” said Elsey Mitchell. “When the police station comes. I say, you know, it’ll be a whole lot better, you know, be more safer over here, I thank.”
Zachary Police Chief Darryl Lawrence said they serve more than 19,000 residents. He says the new headquarters will allow officers to get to know the people they protect. “I’d be able to walk in the neighborhood and talk with some of the citizens in this particular area, and I think that’s important for our community police.”
Mayor McDavid says the current station will close but will still be used for other police business. The $8 million facility, housed on 21 acres, is slated to be complete by the end of 2024.
