PARTY OF 3 NEWBIES

Dutchtown making its first semifinal appearance has been big news in Baton Rouge. But the Griffins are one of three teams making their semifinal debut Friday. Unbeaten Jena (12-0) hosts Union Parish in Division III nonselect. Meanwhile, St. Landry Parish-based Northwest (10-3) travels to Cecilia in Division II nonselect.

A NOLA-BR THING

There are 32 teams left in the LHSAA’s playoffs, a group that includes 13 teams from the New Orleans and Baton Rouge areas. There are seven Nola teams led by third-seeded Isidore Newman in Division III select. Second-seeded Southern Lab in Division IV select is the highest seed among the BR contingent.

SEEKING ENCORES

Only four defending champions have advanced to the LHSAA’s semifinals this fall. Division IV Oak Grove is the lone nonselect 2022 champion still in the playoff mix. Meanwhile, Division II St. Thomas More, Division III St. Charles Catholic and Division IV Ouachita Christian are all defending champions set for semifinals Friday.

CLASSIC PLANNING

The format for next week’s LHSAA Prep Classic at the Caesars Superdome mirrors last season. Action begins at 3:30 p.m. Thursday with two Division IV finals. Three games each, starting at noon, are set for Friday-Saturday. Division I select (Friday) and Division I nonselect (Saturday) are the finales the last two days.
