Code Red Chili & Salsa Cook-off

The ninth annual Lane Foundation Code Red Chili & Salsa Cook-off is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 9, in the Historic Village in Downtown Zachary. Admission and parking are free. Purchase tasting bands to sample chili and salsa from teams competing to be People’s Choice winners for $20 each. Voting tickets are available for $1 each.

A new VIP experience includes a 2024 Code Red Cook-Off souvenir spoon, entrance to the VIP area, concession and drink coupons.

Also new is a partnership with Zachary Rotary Club and the Bunny Hop 5K that will take place before the opening of the cook-off. The Zachary Farmers & Artisans Market will be on-site offering local shopping.

Additional concessions will be available for purchase. Free activities include face-painting, planting experience and more in the KIDS Zone.

Live music at the Gazebo kicks off at 10 a.m. with Dominick Michael, followed by Coteau Grove Band at 11:40 a.m., and Blue Crab Redemption at 1 p.m. Chairs and blankets are welcome.

All proceeds benefit the Lane Foundation Expansion Project campaign fund.

Mammography coach in Zachary

Woman’s Hospital mammography coach offers 3D mammograms March 13 at United Methodist Church, 4205 Church St., Zachary. Physician’s orders are required and appointments are strongly encouraged. Call (225) 396-5367 to schedule.

Vacation Bible school set

Plains Presbyterian Church PCA will host its vacation Bible school, The Race Is On!, from 9 a.m. until noon June 17-21, at 22929 Old Scenic Highway. Children 4 years old through completion of the fifth grade are invited. Watch for online registration to open in May, at www.plainspres.com.

Join a paint party

Charlee’s Angels is having a paint party to paint spoke guard covers for residents’ wheelchairs in Zachary nursing homes at 10 a.m., March 16, at Oakwood Village Assisted Living in Zachary, behind Lane Regional Medical Center and across from The Lodge at Lane Assisted Living.

Everyone is invited to help. The designs are predawn, so participants just have to paint. Refreshments will be available. Attendees are asked to bring a water bottle or drink. Music will also be provided to help bring out your creativity.

Spring shop coming

A Hippity Hop Spring Shop will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 15 at The Rock Church, 20810 Plank Road, Zachary. More than 30 vendors are planned.

Two photo opportunities are available with a baby kangaroo or the Easter bunny. Bring your own camera and a donation for Thread of Hope, which supports victims of human trafficking.

Easter bunny available for those with disabilities

Children and adults with disabilities are invited to join BREC staffers for activities and pictures with the Easter bunny, while avoiding long wait times. 

Arts and crafts, snacks, games and Easter bunny photos will be available.

The Bunny Trail is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 31 at BREC’s Zachary Community Park, 2005 Old Scenic Highway. The event is free-for-all ages with cognitive and sensory processing disorders.

Spring festival set

The Zachary High Ag Spring Fest is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 30.

Photos with the Easter bunny are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Games, petting zoo, face painting, ag crafts, Easter egg hunts and more are available. Attendees can shop for concessions and in the Ag greenhouse.

Costs: Adults and ages 12 and up, $5; ages 2-12, $2; under 2, free

Fish Fridays

A fish fry will be available at the Zachary City Hall parking lot every Friday until Easter: March 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29. For orders of 10 or more, text Mayor David McDavid to set up delivery. Proceeds benefit the Fire and Police Memorial Fund.

Seeking art for hot air balloon festival

The official 2024 Zachary Really Hot Air Balloon Festival is Aug. 10 at BREC Zachary Community Park. The festival is looking for artwork to be featured on event flyers and advertising, as well as festival T-shirts. The deadline to submit for consideration is March 22. Zachary Art Crawl seeks artists

The Virginia Street Art Crawl will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 22 in Downtown Zachary. Artists from Zachary, East and West Feliciana, and beyond will showcase their art along Virginia Street at participating historic homes. Lucille and the Smokers will provide music from the gazebo, courtesy of the Regional Arts Council of Zachary.
