The Audubon State Historic Site, 11788 La. 965, St. Francisville, will devote Saturday to “Remembering John James Audubon.”
The event, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will take place in conjunction with the Friends of Oakley Board annual membership meeting-picnic.
Tours of Oakley House, which are on the hour, are designed to reveal Audubon as he was during his time there in 1821. At 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., Darlene Reaves, a retired science teacher, will give presentations in the Theatre Room of the museum about some of Audubon’s paintings and his own words about them.
“Visitors to Audubon State Historic Site will get a glimpse into Audubon’s mind — his sense of drama, humor and conservation, as well as knowledge about the plantation itself,” a news release says.
Admission prices from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the house tours, presentations and grounds are $10 per adult (18-62); $8 for senior citizens (62 and older); $5 for students (4-17); and free for children (3 and younger).
Nonmembers can join the Friends of Oakley and become a member at the meeting-picnic from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the barn near Oakley House.
The meeting is open and free to the public; however, the Friends group encourages all attendees to become members of the group.
The picnic will offer fried catfish (courtesy of Louisiana Seafood), potato salad, desserts and drinks. Those who haven’t paid their 2023 membership fee may do so during this time.
To help the Friends prepare for the meeting, register in advance by email, including the number and names of people in the group, to thefriendsofoakley@gmail.com.
