The NFC South was a wide-open division in 2023, and it’s expected to be close once again in 2024 with no teams appearing overwhelmingly strong.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons were in all in the mix to win the NFC South last season heading into Week 18, and it’s expected to be another three-horse race according to the early odds.
The Falcons are the early favorite at most sportsbooks, as they’re expected to be improved in 2024 with a new head coach in Raheem Morris and a new quarterback.
Whoever the Falcons new quarterback is could cause them to become heavier favorites, but they also might drop below the Bucs and Saints if they fail to significantly upgrade the position.
The Bucs have won the NFC South for the past three years, and they’re expected to retain Baker Mayfield at quarterback and recently re-signed star wide receiver Mike Evans.
Making other significant free agent moves will likely prove tough for the Bucs though due to their salary cap situation, which is tight like the Saints.
The Saints are still working to get under the cap before the new league year begins, but they’re set to retain quarterback Derek Carr and the majority of their core players.
Sportsbooks aren’t optimistic about the Saints chances though like they were last season, as they’re No. 3 on the odds chart to win the NFC South and remain longshots to win the Super Bowl.
Speaking of longshots, the Carolina Panthers are far behind on the NFC South odds chart, as they were a distant fourth last season and are expected to struggle again in what’s been a rough past few seasons.
The Panthers will have a first-year head coach in Dave Canales, but it doesn’t look like they’ll be able to make up enough ground to contend unless second-year quarterback Bryce Young takes an unexpected leap.
The NFL’s new league year begins on Wednesday, March 13, and the division odds are set to change frequently once the free agency begins.
