BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Attorney General Jeff Landry is alerting consumers they could be entitled to compensation from TurboTax.

On Friday, Landry announced consumers who were allegedly tricked by TurboTax’s owner, Intuit, into paying for free tax services will begin receiving checks from a $141 million multistate settlement.

Over four million people across the nation will receive checks in the mail from the agreement signed by all states. Of those consumers, Landry said about 60,000 Louisiana customers were tricked into paying to file their federal tax returns. Louisiana is set to receive $1,834,090.82 from the settlement, according to Landry.

“Through deceptive marketing, Intuit cheated more than 60,000 of our low-income neighbors in Louisiana,” said Landry. “Today, we are getting money back into those taxpayers’ pockets.”

Customers will be contacted via email about the settlement and checks will be mailed throughout this month.

Those who paid to file federal tax returns through TurboTax for certain tax years but were eligible to file for free through the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) are able to receive a check, according to Landry.

The amount each consumer will receive is based on the number of tax years they qualified for.
