BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Laine Hardy, an “American Idol” winner from Livingston Parish, won’t be formally charged if he follows a program’s conditions, according to East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore.

Moore confirmed on Tuesday that Hardy, 22, enrolled in a pretrial diversionary program. According to the district attorney’s website, the program considers accepting “all first-time, non-violent, criminal defendants.”

Hardy was arrested by LSU Police last spring after allegedly bugging his ex-girlfriend’s dorm. He was charged with illegal wiretapping.

Arrest documents said on April 6, 2022, the victim and her roommate found a device that looked like a phone charger under a piece of furniture in the dorm and learned through Google that it was a recorder. Police said, when confronted by the victim, Hardy admitted to bugging her room.
