BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – PBS program Antiques Roadshow launched its first, and one of five 2023 production tour stops right here in Baton Rouge on Tuesday. Collectors and antique fanatics brought out their most prized possessions in order to find out if they have real worth or just sentimental value.
During the stop at the LSU Rural Life Museum, people brought in all sorts of items to be appraised by experts.
“Somebody had an original copy of Amazing Fantasy 15, first appearance of Spider-Man. It was a 0.5, horrible shape, but still a seven to ten-thousand dollar comic today,” said Antiques Roadshow collectibles appraiser Travis Landry.
Some came out with valuable possessions while others brought sentimental items in search of more information. Mary came from Alabama to showcase a painting that has been around for generations in her family.
“My great grandmother’s the child in the middle who was painted in the 1840s. Mary learned that “it was a lovely family heirloom and maybe worth $500.”
Executive director of Antiques Roadshow, Marsha Bemko says there’s much more to the roadshow, such as unveiling history from antique items.
“We’re going to get to learn a lot about what’s happened in Baton Rouge. The good, the bad, the ugly, the pretty, all of it,” she said.
Benko estimates that about 6,000 items were seen during today’s stop. She mentioned the show will tape about 150 of the items which will end up on three separate episodes.
The popular PBS show has been ongoing for many years, and has only made four stops in Louisiana. Those that showed up on Tuesday don’t know if they will make the show, but they can expect the content of the stop to be aired on the 28th season which will come out in 2024.
