Celebrate Sicilian heritage in Independence
Soak in Sicilian heritage March 8-10 in downtown Independence at the Independence Sicilian Heritage Festival.
The festival include a spaghetti-eating contest, meatball toss, parade and lots of food.
Things kick off at 4 p.m. March 8 with music by 3rd Street Band, followed by performances by Ferg’s Highway and Southern Heat. On March 9, the parade rolls at 10 a.m. and the spaghetti-eating contest and meatball toss start at 11:30 a.m.
On March 10, the festival starts at 11 a.m. with Open Range playing at 1:30 p.m. and Dominos at 4 p.m.
King Dale Carona and queen Olivia are festival royalty this year. Lisa Carona is the madre and Charles Baglio is the grand marshal.
Cornhole tournament set
Livingston Young Professionals are hosting a cornhole tournament from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. March 20 at Sheri’s Daiquiris.
Livingston Young Professionals is a program of the Livingston Chamber of Commerce.

Mammography coming to Denham Springs, Livingston
Woman’s Hospital brings breast imaging to Livingston Parish with its mobile mammography coach. The coach makes mammograms more accessible than ever offering advanced 3D mammogram technology. Physician’s orders are required and appointments are strongly encouraged.
The mammography bus is stopping March 6 at Denham Springs Open Health Care Clinic, 30789 Range Ave., Denham Springs. Call (225) 655-6422 to schedule an appointment.

Scholarship offered
March 31 is the deadline to apply for the Lloyd F. deGeneres Memorial Scholarship.
The $1,000 scholarship is presented annually to one or two graduating seniors of Denham Springs High School. Its intent is to offer a “hand” to a student who will have difficulty paying initial college fees and expenses, according to a news release.
Applications should be submitted to the Denham Spring High guidance office. Late applications will not be accepted.
Applicants must provide a handwritten statement of how you would benefit from this scholarship.
DeGeneres, know as “Coach D” and “Big D,” was born in Battle and graduated from Clinton High School. He received a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Southeastern Louisiana University.
Hall of Fame nomination deadline set
The Denham Springs High School Athletic Hall of Fame has set the nomination process for the Class of 2024 honorees through March 31.
The annual induction banquet for the Class of 2024 will be held Sept. 5 at Forrest Grove Plantation in Denham Springs. In addition to being honored at the banquet, inductees will also be presented to the public the following night, Sept. 6, at halftime of the DSHS-Hammond football game in Yellow Jacket Stadium.
This will be the 14th year the Denham Springs Athletic Association and DSHS have co-hosted the event.
To date, 93 former Yellow Jacket greats have been inducted into the Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame Selection Committee does not nominate the candidates. Anyone with an interest in DSHS sports may submit a nomination; however, people may not nominate themselves. All nominations must conform to the Hall of Fame nomination guidelines available to the public by visiting the DSHS website at www.denhamspringshs.org or by picking up a copy at the school office.
