ASCENSION PARISH, La. (BRPROUD) — The Ascension Parish School Board approved a modified student handbook that includes a change to searching students.

According to the Ascension Parish Schools 2023-24 Student Handbook, students and school property may be searched by faculty, staff and security guards if a violation of the handbook has been committed.

Ascension Parish Schools spokesperson Jackie Tisdell said, “We have had guidelines for student searches for a long time. The only change to that section is that if a student refuses to be searched, then the student’s refusal to permit the search shall be considered an admission by the student.”

The handbook states random searches with metal detectors may be conducted at any time as long as the detection device doesn’t touch the student intentionally. The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office Drug Team may conduct searches as well, which can include a narcotics dog.
