GONZALES, La. (BRPROUD) — A Baton Rouge man died after crashing his car into a canal in Ascension Parish Thursday night.
Louisiana State Police said around midnight, troopers were investigating a crash that killed Kelvin Ortega, 26, near Highway 429 and Boudreaux Road. During the investigation, it was determined Ortega was speeding before running a stop sign at the intersection and crashing into the canal.
State Police said Ortega was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was taken to a local hospital for serious injuries where he later died.
Officials said impairment is suspected and an investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
