BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Last year, the state legislature mandated that adult websites must ask for age verification before someone can access the site.
A new bill is being proposed to allow the attorney general to go after sites that don’t comply. State Rep. Laurie Schlegel brought the original bill to prevent children from accessing pornography. She wants to have civil penalties for websites that don’t follow the rules.
The proposed bill states that the attorney general should give no less than 30 days to comply before initiating a civil action.
“Some are complying and some are not and that is totally unfair,” said Schlegel. “So some decided they are just not going to comply. This allows the AG to bring a little more teeth into the bill.”
Some advocates raised concern over the definition of “content harmful to minors” listed in the bill, fearing it could lead to censorship. There are talks of making the language more consistent with the previous bill to fix the issue.
