BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The University Lakes restoration project will begin Phase 1 of construction as soon as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permits, according to LSU.
Work on the project has so far consisted of advance work, officials said.
The project’s first phase, which is estimated at $17,874,132, will prioritize flood risk reduction and water quality improvements, according to the university. Details of this phase of restoration include dredging City Park Lake and Erie Lake and expanding the footprint of the LSU Bird Sanctuary. Officials said other elements include May Street improvements and interim landscaping after dredging.
According to the website, the goal of the project is to make routes safer for walkers, runners and cyclists while improving the lakes’ water quality and animal habitats.
