BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Did you know that Louisiana requires florists to have a license?

You probably know that anyone with a medical degree or a law degree needs a license to practice, but Louisiana requires certain jobs such as an auctioneer or shampooer to be licensed too.

To be licensed to practice a job, an applicant will need to complete a certain amount of hours in a specific school or program. After completing the program, the applicant will need to apply to the state board and pass the state’s exam. After passing the test, the license fee needs to be paid.

Here are some jobs in Louisiana that you may not know require a license.

Interior designer

Louisiana is one of three states that requires potential interior designers to get a license for commercial use and work with engineers, architects and other professionals.

  • Licensing Fee: $150 and renew every year
  • Hours: Interior design programs at a Louisiana university or college need the 5-hour CEU requirement but licensing fees are waived.
  • Exam: Pass all three sections of the National Council for Interior Designer Qualification exam.

Makeup artist

Louisiana is one of 37 states that require makeup artists to be licensed in order to practice.

  • Licensing Fee: $25 and renew every year
  • Hours: 40 in an approved cosmetology school
  • Exam: Cosmetology State Exam

Auctioneer

Louisiana is one of 28 states that requires a license to be an auctioneer to sell items at an auction and protect the transfer of property.

Florist

Louisiana is the only state that requires florists to be licensed to arrange and sell floral designs and cut flowers.

Shampooer

Louisiana is one of 33 states that requires a person to be licensed to shampoo and rinse a customer’s hair. If a person already has a cosmetology license, the permit is not needed.

  • License fee: There is no fee and the permit is valid for one year
  • Hours: 40 hours of training at an approved school
