Documentary about history of Baton Rouge rap music

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Rapper Max Minelli and former rapper Matt Keith are making it their mission to see that the story of Baton Rouge music is told.

The pair teamed up to produce and direct the rap documentary “Diamonds in the Dirt,” the story of some of Baton Rouge’s most successful rappers. The documentary details the history of rap in Baton Rouge, how the sound came to be and the artists and producers who created the movement.

Keith said four years of work, countless hours of editing and hundreds of interviews were shot to create the documentary. The two-part documentary follows rap from the late 1980s electric hip hop to today’s current artists and sounds.

“We feel like we have some of the biggest artists in the world,” Minelli said. “We got a lot of legendary things, you know, slang, culture that you know, people here gravitated to but nobody gives us the credit we deserve so we felt like nobody gonna tell our story, we gotta tell it ourself.”

A Baton Rouge premiere screening for “Diamonds in the Dirt 2” will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21 at AMC Mall of Louisiana located at 9168 Mall of Louisiana Blvd.
