Two arrests were made in a outbreak of drag-racing at parking lots across Ascension Parish one night last week, the Sheriff’s Office said.
At 9:30 p.m. on Friday, March 10, Sheriff’s deputies began responding to calls about reckless driving involving multiple vehicles, Ascension Sheriff Bobby Webre said in a statement Thursday.
“Deputies were able to locate the group of drivers, along with bystanders, at the Ralph’s Supermarket on Hwy. 44,” Webre said. “Upon arrival, deputies observed several vehicles wildly spinning in circles, which is often referred to as ‘doing donuts.'”
“Passengers were also seen sitting on top of the doors while the vehicles were spinning,” he said.
Deputies were able to make several traffic stops as drivers and bystanders attempted to flee the scene.
Deputies arrested two people that night: Avante Jones, 20, for reckless operation, damage to property, and trespassing, and Schylar Mays, 20 for principle to reckless operation, principal to damage to property, and trespassing, the sheriff said.
“I offer this warning to those who would duplicate this behavior — it will not be tolerated here in Ascension Parish,” Webre said. “These dangerous stunts could result in serious injury or death to the drivers and to the bystanders. It is our continuing mission to ensure the safety of the citizens and guests we serve in this great parish.
“If you think you will get away with such crimes, you should think twice, because we will locate you, we will arrest you, and your vehicle will be towed at your expense,” said Webre, who went on to thank the residents who called the Sheriff’s Office that night.
East Baton Rouge Parish has cracked down on stunt driving, after a sharp increase in complaints from residents and several crashes, some of them deadly. The parish toughened legal penalties for doing the stunts.
