Here’s the deadline for Louisianians to register to vote in 2024 presidential primary

Today is the deadline for Louisiana residents to register in-person or by mail to vote in the upcoming March primary election. 

On March 23, voters across the state will head to the polls to choose their party’s preferred U.S. presidential candidate during the primary election. In the primary, each voter can only vote for a party’s nominee if they are affiliated with that party. So, Republican voters can only vote for the Republican Party nominee. 

Some local governments also will have local races for voters to cast ballots on, which all voters will be able to participate in. 

In Louisiana, eligible voters must be 18 years or older, free from any felony convictions, and have been registered to vote 30 days before an election if they are registering in person or by mail. They must also live in the parish where they are registering. 

There’s also an option to register online 20 days before an election — which is March 2. 

Here’s what to know about registering to vote and other important election dates.

Registering online 

Louisiana uses an online voter registration system called GeauxVote. From there, you can fill out an online application to register.

You’ll need your Louisiana driver’s license or Louisiana special ID card in hand when you complete the online application.

The form will ask for an audit code on the card that you must enter. The audit code is a four-digit number labeled AUDIT on the front of your license.

Dates to know for 2024 elections

Early voting for the presidential preference primary will begin on March 9 and end on March 16. The last day to request an absentee ballot is on March 19.

On election day, March 23, polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. 

This fall on November 5, Louisianans will also cast their ballots in the U.S. presidential race along with state congressional other local races.
