However, it’s unclear how much money each of the state’s public school districts could save through the debt payment plan, a state retirement system official testified Thursday. Over 60% of Louisiana charter schools also would see no savings under that approach, the official said, because they don’t pay off state retirement debt.
“Someone in a particular parish could take those savings and use them for something else, or give them in a different amount,” said Rep. C. Denise Marcelle, D-Baton Rouge.
A broad coalition of House Republicans converged in the session’s early weeks to build the budget bill. Crafted largely by Zeringue and Rep. Brett Geymann, R-Lake Charles, the plan that exited the House Thursday earned support from the chamber’s three politically conservative caucuses: The House Republican Caucus, House Conservative Caucus and House Freedom Caucus.
