ADDIS, La. (BRPROUD) – When one hears about the sweet science, the first thing that may come to mind is boxing. Kait Culy, owner of Honey Bee Baking Co., aims to change that through her baking.
The West Baton Rouge Parish resident combined her love of animals — particularly bees — with baking. Culy has a bachelor’s in biology and a master’s in public health in environmental health sciences.
“Baking is not just art, it is science,” she said. “Precision is important when it comes to a beautiful outcome in your baked goods, and I realized I loved learning the why behind how to make the best quality goods.”
The quest for the why led Culy to open a cottage bakery offering cookies, baby cakes, muffins, sheet treats, breads and specialty items.
Along with being a scientist and baker, Culy is a mother to a 2-year-old and newborn. That may explain why she wants to look into one sweet in particular.
Lactation treats “are baked goods that contain ingredients meant to increase a mother’s breast milk supply,” according to Culy. She wants “to create something that isn’t just nourishing for the baby, but for the mother as well.”
Culy aspires to open a brick-and-mortar location and is now running her business from home. If you would like to try some of these sweet treats, you can submit an order here. The businesswoman said she has also put a lot of thought and emphasis into how her business impacts the environment. While she wraps goods in plastic to protect them, Culy said all her other packaging is recyclable.
If Cinnamon Toast Crunch Snickerdoodles or S’mores Rice Crispies are not what you are looking for, Culy said she is taking custom requests. The local mother said she enjoys a challenge and the chance to make more people smile!
