1. WHAT WE LEARNED
Well, we learned you don’t have to score, much, to win a championship in basketball. LSU won the NCAA Greenville 2 regional 54-42 over Miami on Sunday night with nearly nary a jumper finding the basket and shooting 30.2% for the game. The lack of offense may have been an offense to the eyes, but victory is in the eye of the beholder. In that respect, it’s LSU’s most beautiful win in a long time.
2. TRENDING NOW
Kim Mulkey. No, not because of what she wore Sunday, though the sparkly sequined blouse was eye-catching. But because of what she has done with LSU’s program in two short seasons, taking the Tigers from complete obscurity to the Women’s Final Four. She’s said for two years LSU hasn’t done anything yet, just won a bunch of games. Sunday, for the first time in many years, the Tigers were cutting down nets. That’s something, alright.
3. FINAL THOUGHTS
Fifteen years. That’s how long LSU fans waited for their women’s basketball team to return to the Final Four, most of them years when the Tigers became a virtually forgotten program. It took less than 24 months to return to national relevance under Mulkey. Offense has been a struggle throughout the NCAA tournament for LSU, true, but the Tigers are doing it with defense and rebounding. Can it carry them to their first championship game?
