BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The USS KIDD Veterans Museum will open a permanent pirate exhibit inside the museum on Saturday, March 11.

According to a news release, “Pirates! The Story Behind the Pirate of the Pacific” is for pirate enthusiasts and highlights the role pirates played in the history of the USS KIDD.

A full-scale replica of an 18th-century pirate’s ship gun deck is part of the exhibit. While visitors stroll through the deck, they will learn the story of Captain William Kidd, who was described as “America’s most ruthless buccaneer.” Kidd’s portrayal in films inspired the World War II crew of the then-new USS KIDD to adopt a pirate identity.

Pirate artifacts from the USS KIDD and namesakes will demonstrate the legacy of pirates that have been passed down from the 1940s to today while comparing facts against fiction and lore.

The last story on the adventure through the exhibit is about Louisiana’s pirate, Jean Lafitte. Visitors will learn about how Lafitte played a big role in shaping New Orleans and southern Louisiana.

The USS KIDD Veterans Museum is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Click here for more information.
